Why These Myths Persist — and Why They Matter
Popular beliefs about animal behavior often outlast the science that contradicts them. Television programs, outdated training manuals, and well-meaning but misinformed advice passed between owners can all keep a debunked idea alive for decades. The consequences are real: owners who act on faulty assumptions may use methods that damage their relationship with their pet, suppress learning, or even compromise animal welfare.

Myth
Dogs misbehave to assert dominance over their owners and must be shown who is 'alpha.'
Fact
Dogs do not structure their relationships with humans around rank-based dominance hierarchies. Behavior labeled as 'dominant' almost always has a simpler explanation rooted in learning history and reinforcement.
The dominance model was adapted from early wolf research that has since been substantially revised — including by the original researcher. Wolves in natural family groups rarely engage in the kind of constant status-seeking the model described. Myth
Cats cannot be trained — they are too independent and simply don't respond to instruction.
Fact
Cats learn through the same operant conditioning principles as dogs. They respond reliably to reward-based training when the rewards align with their individual motivations.
The misconception largely stems from cats' lower social motivation compared with dogs. Cats are not domesticated to work cooperatively with humans in the way dogs have been selectively bred to do, which means they are less likely to comply just to please. But food-motivated or play-motivated cats can be trained to come when called, use a carrier voluntarily, accept handling, and perform a wide range of practical behaviors. The key is identifying what each individual cat finds genuinely rewarding — which varies considerably — and keeping sessions brief. Myth
If a dog growls or snaps, it has an aggression problem and the behavior should be corrected immediately.

Growling and snapping are warning signals, not problems in themselves. Suppressing them through punishment leaves the underlying discomfort unaddressed and removes the animal's ability to communicate.
A dog that growls is communicating that it is uncomfortable. That signal is valuable — it gives owners and bystanders time to respond before a bite occurs. Punishing growling does not reduce the underlying fear or pain; research and clinical case reports consistently show that it tends to produce animals that bite without warning because earlier signals were suppressed. The appropriate response is to identify and address the root cause of the dog's distress. Pets act out of spite when they urinate indoors, destroy furniture, or refuse commands.

Spite requires a level of social cognition — the ability to attribute mental states and intend harm — that is not supported by evidence in domestic pets.
