What Makes an Ingredient 'Active'

Scan any skincare label and you'll encounter a wall of chemical names. Most are emollients, preservatives, or texture agents—useful, but passive. Active ingredients are the ones doing the actual work: changing how skin cells behave, accelerating renewal, fighting pigmentation, or defending against environmental damage.

The Most Common Actives, Explained

AHAs (Alpha-Hydroxy Acids)

Glycolic acid and lactic acid are the most common AHAs. They work by loosening the bonds between dead surface cells, allowing them to shed more evenly. This can improve texture, dullness, and uneven tone over time. Because they increase photosensitivity, daily SPF is non-negotiable when using them.

BHAs (Beta-Hydroxy Acids)

Salicylic acid is the primary BHA in skincare. It's oil-soluble, meaning it can penetrate into pores rather than just working on the surface. This makes it particularly suited to oily or acne-prone skin. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties.

Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid)

A well-researched antioxidant that helps neutralize environmental damage, supports collagen synthesis, and can gradually brighten uneven pigmentation. It's unstable and degrades quickly—look for opaque, airtight packaging and check that formulas are acidic enough to remain effective.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

One of the most versatile and well-tolerated actives available. It supports the skin barrier, reduces visible redness, regulates sebum production, and can diminish the appearance of enlarged pores. Its generally low irritation profile makes it suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin.

Retinoids (Including Retinol)

Vitamin A derivatives that influence how skin cells turn over. Over time, consistent use is associated with smoother texture, reduced fine lines, and more even pigmentation. They require gradual introduction—starting a few nights per week—because they can cause dryness and sensitivity, especially initially. Prescription-strength retinoids differ significantly from over-the-counter retinol; a dermatologist can advise on appropriate options.

Hyaluronic Acid

Technically a humectant rather than a treatment active, hyaluronic acid attracts and holds water in the skin. It doesn't repair or resurface; it hydrates.
