What Makes Something a Humectant?

A humectant is any ingredient that attracts and retains water molecules. In skincare, humectants work by drawing moisture either from the environment or from deeper layers of the skin up to the surface, keeping the outer layer — called the stratum corneum — adequately hydrated. This is distinct from occlusives (which seal moisture in) and emollients (which soften and smooth). Humectants don't prevent water from escaping on their own; they simply pull it in.

How Glycerin Works

Glycerin (also called glycerol) is a small, simple molecule derived from plant oils or produced synthetically. Glycerin is highly effective at drawing moisture even at low concentrations.
