No pain, no gain — if you're not sore the next day, you didn't work hard enough.

Fact

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a normal response to unfamiliar movement, not a measure of workout quality.

Soreness occurs when muscles are exposed to new stress, particularly exercises involving lengthening under load (eccentric movements). As your body adapts, the same effective workout produces less soreness — which is actually a sign of progress, not stagnation. Chasing soreness can lead to overtraining, poor recovery, and increased injury risk. A workout that leaves you functional and energized the next day is often more effective long-term than one that leaves you unable to walk.

You can target fat loss in specific areas by working out those muscles.

Spot reduction is not supported by evidence. Fat loss occurs systemically across the body, not locally.

Doing hundreds of crunches won't selectively burn abdominal fat, and inner-thigh exercises won't preferentially slim that area. Where your body loses fat first — and last — is largely determined by genetics and hormones, not by which muscles you train. The bodybuilders seen in fitness media follow highly specific protocols — years of structured training, deliberate eating, and in many cases pharmaceutical support — that are not the outcome of a standard strength training routine. For most people, resistance training produces a leaner, more defined appearance by increasing muscle density while reducing fat. Women in particular have lower baseline testosterone levels, making large-scale muscle gain physiologically difficult without deliberate effort over extended periods.

Myth

More exercise is always better — rest days are for people who aren't serious.

Recovery is when the body actually adapts and grows stronger. Skipping rest increases injury risk and can impair performance.

Training creates stress on muscles, connective tissue, and the nervous system. Adaptation — getting fitter, stronger, or faster — happens during recovery, not during the workout itself. Chronic overtraining without adequate rest can lead to a plateau, persistent fatigue, hormonal disruption, and higher rates of injury.
